Q

What is glass made of?

Credit: Envato Elements
A

sand, soda ash, and limestone

These materials are melted at a very high temperature to form a new material: glass.

Q

When you melt copper and tin and combine them, you get _____.

A

bronze

Bronze is an alloy which consists mostly of copper and about 12% tin. The resulting metal is harder than pure iron and more resistant to corrosion.

Besides its strength, bronze elevated urban civilization in 3300 B.C. and created better tools than their stone and copper counterparts.

Q

What is silk made of?

A

filaments from the cocoons of silkworms

Originating in China, the earliest production of silk began around 3630 BC.

The silk itself is derived from the cocoon of larvae. It takes about 3,000 silkworms to make a single pound of silk.

Q

What is paint made of?

Credit: Envato Elements
A

pigment, solvents, resins, and additives

The pigment gives paint its color; solvent makes it easier to apply; resins help it dry; and additives exist mostly as antifungicidal agents. Pigment is either made from organic sources such as coal or inorganic sources such as chemical oxidation.

Solvent in exterior paint is often made from chemicals such as alcohol, while most indoor paints are water based.

Resins (including acrylic) are chemically constructed alkyd polymers.

When looking at the difference between oil and acrylic paint: Oil paint has a longer drying time, allowing for more blending and layered effects, while acrylic paint dries quickly, has a more permanent finish, and can be cleaned up with water.

Q

What are hot dogs made of?

A

meat trimmings of chicken, beef, or pork.

This mixture of meat “by-product” is blended with many other ingredients like spices and coloring, typically using a sausage-making machine.

Q

What is magma made of?

Credit: Envato Elements
A

molten rock

Magma is found in the Earth’s mantle all the way up to its surface. As magma reaches the surface, it begins to crystallize and form gases, putting pressure on the Earth’s crust.

When the pressure bursts through a fissure in the earth (a volcano), it erupts and converts to lava when it reaches the air, at a temperature of about 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q

What is porcelain made of?

Credit: Envato Elements
A

kaolin and petunse

Kaolin, also called china clay is a mineral that gives porcelain its plasticity. Petunse - or pottery stone - gives it its hardness and translucency.

Both forms of clay are merged and heated up to form porcelain.

Q

What is plastic made of?

Credit: Envato Elements
A

cellulose tree fiber (from softwood trees), coal, natural gas, salt, and crude oil (petroleum) by-products

These materials are put through a polymerisation or polycondensation process, to transform it into plastic that can be shaped via special moldings.

Q

What is paper made of?

Credit: Envato Elements
A

cellulose fibre

(woodpulp)

Commercial paper we use in our printers is made with a simple process. Cellulose is harvested from trees for cellulose fibre (i.e. woodpulp). These wood chips are treated to a water bath, after which they are pressed and heated to form paper.

Some paper is treated with special chemicals to give it more strength or water resistance.
