2
Q

Mechanism of action:

Antigout drugs

A

Inhibits formation of uric crystals and inflammatory response.

3
Q

Generic names:

Antigout drugs

allopurinol, colchicine

4
Q

Most common side effects and nursing considerations:

Antigout drugs

A
  1. nephrotoxicity - monitor BUN, creatinine and urine output
  2. avoid foods with purines in them
    • avoid meat and alcohol
    • purines break down into uric acid
  3. hepatotoxicity - check liever function tests: ALT, AST
5
Q

Nursing considerations:

Antiosteoporotic: alendronate and risedronate

A
  • take in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of water
  • stay upright for at least 30 minutes to prevent esophageal irritation
6

Generic names:

Muscle relaxers

A
  • carisoprodol
  • cyclobenzaprine
  • baclofen
  • methocarbamol
7

Most common side effects:

Muscle relaxers

A
  • sedation / drowsiness
  • orthostatic hypotension
  • anticholinergic side effects
8
Q

Nursing considerations:

Muscle relaxers: sedation / drowsiness

A

Implement safety and fall precautions.

9
Q

Nursing considerations:

Muscle relaxers: orthostatic hypotension

A
  • assess for dizziness
  • have client sit at bedside for a few minutes before getting up
  • implement safety and fall precautions
10
Q

Nursing considerations:

Muscle relaxers: anticholinergic side effects

A
  • causes blurry vision - implement safety and fall precautions
  • causes urinary retention - monitor intake and output
  • causes dry mouth - give candy or ice chips
  • causes constipation - encourage fluids/fiber/walking

“can’t see, can’t pee, can’t spit, can’t shit”

Antiosteoporotic

A

Muscle pain: notify HCP if it becomes severe.
